Comtat de Ribagorça. Founded 872 by Raymond I of Pallars and Ribagorza; capital Benabarre (early center Roda de Isábena). Linked to Sobrarbe through Bernard I Humfred's marriage to Toda Galíndez of Aragon. The ruling countess Tota of Ribagorza (1003–1010) allied with Pallars; Castilian and then Navarrese intervention followed. Sancho III of Pamplona absorbed Ribagorza (1018) into Navarre; his son Gonzalo held it with Sobrarbe, and on Gonzalo's death it passed to Ramiro I of Aragon, forming part of the nucleus of the Kingdom of Aragon. The comital title persisted under Aragonese royal cadets until 1598.
