1202–1237. A crusading military order founded at Riga by Bishop Albert of Riga (with Pope Innocent III's approval) to conquer and Christianize Livonia (modern Latvia and Estonia). They subdued the Livs, Latgalians (Jersika, Koknese), and Estonians. Crushingly defeated by the Samogitians and Semigallians at the Battle of Saule (1236), the surviving Brothers were merged into the Teutonic Order in 1237 as its autonomous Livonian branch (Livonian Order).
