The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) was built by Josip Broz Tito and his communist Partisans, who had led the most effective anti-Axis resistance in occupied Europe. A federation of six republics (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia) and two autonomous provinces (Vojvodina, Kosovo), it broke with Stalin in 1948 (the Tito–Stalin split), developed its own model of workers' "self-management," and co-founded the Non-Aligned Movement. Tito's death in 1980 removed the keystone; economic crisis, resurgent nationalisms, and the rise of Slobodan Milošević in Serbia strained the federation. In 1991 Slovenia and Croatia declared independence, triggering the Yugoslav Wars and the state's violent disintegration. Its dissolution is conventionally dated to 1991–1992.
